Pastor Frank Alexander was born into a family of preachers that
included a grandfather and several uncles. As a boy, he often
preached the Sunday sermon he had just heard at a local Baptist Church
in Louisiana. His first pulpit was a flowering tree in his front
yard. By age 13, he was conducting funeral services for birds
and animals, including the family pig.
Then the family moved to Texas. Throughout his teen-age years in
Fort Worth, Frank spent his extracurricular time in church activities.
He was a frequent speaker to church youth groups. Occasionally,
he participated in activities at the Bethlehem Community Center, A
Methodist Church Ministry. Through spending time with the
Director, a Methodist Missionary, Frank developed an interest in
missions. Prior to this encounter, Frank had planned to become
an electronic engineer. That was his plan in spite of his
longtime interest in preaching. However, Frank's new interest resulted
in his matriculating at Bishop College. He became certain of his
call to the ministry on a summer night in 1964, when he was 21.
He was taking his usual shortcut across a field on the way home from
work. The words of a sermon seemed to tumble ahead of his steps.
He knew God was calling him to preach. He announced his decision
publicly, and the church affirmed the call. Frank preached his
first sermon from the Book of Hebrews about "A New Covenant."
One year later, after graduation, an employment opportunity with Job
Corps brought Frank north to Indiana. While working in the Jobs
Corps he attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Leaving
Job Corps in 1969, he became the Director of Gateway Christian Center
in Muncie Indiana. For the next five years, he did the "whole
nine yards", fund-raising and managing the Youth Center and Health
Clinic for all of Delaware County. In 1974 he was commissioned
as a Missionary of the American Baptist Churches USA and became the
Director of the Edna Martin Christian Center in Indianapolis. In
1975 he also began to Pastor the College Avenue Baptist Church of
Indianapolis. He later lead the church in relocating to
Martindale-Brightwood Neighborhood and changed the name of the church
to Oasis of Hope Baptist Church, where he has been ever since.
The Missionary calling has been a strong part of Frank's life and
ministry, even as a pastor. He has led Oasis in developing a
strong missionary emphasis. This includes sending missionaries
to foreign fields and having the church tithe to missions. As
President of Mission for Rural Africa, Inc., Frank annually leads a
team of short term missionaries to the mission field in Africa.
Frank involves himself in home missions as well. This is seen in
part in his community involvement as:

Let us not give up
meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing but let us
encourage one another -- and all the more as you see the Day
approaching.
